Privacy Policy

NaijaWaka is a quiz game about Nigerian current affairs. This page explains, in plain words, what information the game uses and why. We try to keep this to the minimum the game needs. We handle personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

What stays on your device

Your progress (levels, stars, score, lives, game money, streak, badges), your sound setting, a random player ID, your chosen nickname and any unfinished payment attempt are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. There is no account and no password. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies. If you clear your browser data, this information is deleted from your device.

The rankings

If you choose to join the player rankings, we store on our servers: the nickname you chose, your score and star count, the time of your last update, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your random player ID. Your nickname and score are visible to everyone who opens the rankings, so please do not use your real name or any personal detail as a nickname. To keep the rankings fair and stop abuse, we also keep a count of new ranking entries per day for each network address, using a scrambled version of the address that cannot be turned back into the address.

Payments

Buying lives is handled by Paystack. You enter your email and payment details on Paystack's secure checkout, not on our pages. We never see or store your card or bank details. After you pay, our server asks Paystack to confirm the payment and records the payment reference together with a scrambled code that links it to your device, so the same payment cannot be used twice. Paystack's own privacy notice applies to the information you give them.

Who else handles data

• Cloudflare hosts the game and our database, and processes network information (such as your IP address) to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.
• Paystack processes payments.
• Google Fonts supplies the game's fonts; your browser contacts Google to download them.
• Photographs in the game come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences. They are stored on our own site, and the credits are on the image credits page.

Children

The game is designed for a general audience and does not ask for personal details. Children should ask a parent or guardian before buying lives or joining the rankings.

Your choices

• Clear your browser data to remove everything stored on your device.
• To have your nickname and score removed from the rankings, contact us with your nickname.
• You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, using the contact below.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change.

Optional accounts

You can create an account with an email and password to keep your progress safe. We store the email address, a one-way hash of your password (never the password itself) and your saved game progress. You can delete your account and saved progress at any time from the Account button in the game. The game works fully without an account.

Contact

Questions, payment problems or requests to delete your ranking name: keep your Paystack payment reference (it starts with NQ) and message us through the NaijaWaka page on social media or the Paystack receipt sent to you. We aim to reply within 7 days.
